FAQ

Q. What does Made to Order Mean?

A. Made to Order means the piece has not been made yet and is not ready to ship. When you place your order, I will then make the piece and ship it. Please allow at least two weeks for all Made to Order pieces to ship, unless otherwise stated in the item's description. Rush orders are available, please reach out to me if you need a Rush order before placing the order, a fee will apply. The fee will depend on materials availability and time frame.

Q. Can I schedule a local pick up?

A. Some times. Please reach out to me before placing your order. I often am able to meet customers or leave your order at a certain location for you to pick up. If I am doing an event, often I will make local pick up available at check out, pick up location, date and times will be noted.

Q. Where do you source your materials?

A. My metals come from a reputable and globally recognized jewelry supplier within the USA, of which 99% of their metals are recycled. I source metals only from them in order to ensure the best quality. My stones come from a variety of places throughout the USA, some are mined in the USA and some are mined outside of the USA. All of my stones are natural unless otherwise noted.  If you have any further questions about a particular stone, please feel free to message me and I will answer all questions to the best of my ability.

Q. Will my piece's patina (blackening) stay the same forever?

A. Unfortunately no. Patinas will change over time depending on how frequently they are exposed to moisture, sweat, lotion and other beauty products. If you would like a piece re-darkened please do not hesitate to contact me to make arrangements. The best way to reach me is via email at sclearyjewelry@gmail.com

Q. What is Gold Filled?

A. Gold Filled is a layer of gold bonded through heat to a brass core. This is different from Gold Plated. Gold Plated is is very thin layer of gold over a base metal, it is often dipped and wears off quickly. With proper care, Gold Filled can last a very long time. Most Gold Filled pieces can last 10 to 30 years, however the layer of gold will eventually wear off. The layer of gold on gold filled jewelry is approximately 5 to 10 times thicker than gold plated jewelry and 15 to 25 times thicker than gold electroplated. Gold Filled is a wonderful alternative to solid gold. If it is in your budget I recommend purchasing solid gold, if you see a piece you'd like and its not listed as an option please reach out to see if the piece can be made in solid 14k or 18k gold.

Q. What affects the longevity of my Gold Filled or Sterling Silver jewelry?

A. When it comes to caring for your jewelry, keep the following in mind. Exposure to chemicals and improper care can cause your jewelry to tarnish disappointingly fast.

Often people wear their jewelry day and night, regardless of conditions. Lotion, sunscreen, soaps, hand sanitizer and even water can cause your piece to tarnish. The longer and more often jewelry is exposed, the faster it'll wear and tarnish. Pieces with gemstones should never come into contact with beauty products.

Even sweat can cause pieces to tarnish, every body is different and everyone has a different ph level. Often people wearing gold rings will see their fingers turning black, even green.

If your jewelry comes into contact with beauty products or household cleaners, I recommend removing the piece immediately, wash with a mild dish soap and water, fully dry and properly cleaning them with a polishing cloth. It is important to completely dry your jewelry, long exposure to water can cause your jewelry to tarnish. Remove jewelry before swimming in pools and the ocean, before entering hot tubs, even showering.

Proper storage of your jewelry is also important. More exposure to air and moisture means more oxidation. Store jewelry in an air tight baggie. Jewelry can be stored in jewelry boxes, just be sure to clean your pieces regularly.

I do recommend removing rings and necklaces before bed. Some times necklaces can catch on fabric, or even be pulled unintentionally in your sleep. Often your fingers swell while sleeping so your rings may feel tight in the morning.

Q. What can cause my jewelry to tarnish?

A. Chemicals like hairspray, perfume, deodorant, body lotion, bleach, etc., can speed up the tarnishing process. Also be mindful to keep silver away from rubber, vinegar, olives and fruit juice.

Do store your jewelry in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not store jewelry unprotected in the bathroom or exposed to humidity and moisture.

Q. Can I wear your jewelry even though I have sensitive skin?

A. In most cases, yes! Most people have allergies to base metals like nickel, copper and brass, like myself! I do not use any nickel, copper or brass in my jewelry for this reason. However, Sterling Silver and Gold are alloys. Meaning they contain some copper or brass. If you are super sensitive, I recommend Fine Silver or higher karat solid gold like 18k or 22k. I can custom make pieces using these materials. White Gold contains nickel so keep this in mind, there are white gold options with out nickel but are a bit more expensive.

Q. Can your rings be resized?

A. For the majority of my rings, no. If possible, it is usually only by stretching it up to 1/2 size larger. Each of my pieces are created with a specific aesthetic in mind and resizing without essentially remaking the ring would alter the appearance and integrity of the ring. Resizing can be done by removing gems and remaking the settings, please contact me via email at sclearyjewelry@gmail.com for a quote.

Q. How do I measure to find my bracelet size?

A. To find your perfect bracelet length, we recommend using a flexible ruler or flexible measuring tape. If you don't have one, a string will work. Wrap around your wrist and mark the length with your finger or a marker and lay the string against a ruler to measure the length.

We then recommend utilizing the chart below to find your desired fit for a chain bracelet. Please note lengths below:

  • For a Snug fit:  Add 1/2" to your exact wrist size
  • For a Just Right fit:  Add 3/4"
  • For a "Relaxed" fit:  Add 1"

For cuff bracelets find wrist's measurement using flexible ruler, or string and refer to chart below:

  • Small- fits wrists 6"
  • Medium- fits wrists 6.5"
  • Large- fits wrists 7"

Cuffs will have 1/2" opening. Please reach out to me via email at sclearyjewelry@gmail.com if you need a different size.

Q. How do I measure for necklace length?

A. To find your perfect length, we recommend using a flexible measuring tape to mark where your necklace will hang. If you do not have a tailors measuring tape, you may use a string to measure your desired length. Mark the length with your finger or a marker and lay the string against a ruler to measure the length. Chain length can be found in each necklace's product description, the chain length does not include the pendant length.

If you are looking to layer, we recommend a 2-3 inch difference between each layered piece.

Q. I like a piece listed but would like it with a different gemstone or in a different metal?

A. In most cases, yes. Please feel free to reach out via email and include the piece's listing and provide as much detail as to what you are looking for. Most necklaces can be made with a different chain length, charges may apply.

Q. I see a ring on your site that I like, but my size is not available. Can you make one in my size?

A. In most cases, yes! Some one of a kind rings cannot be reproduced but a similar piece usually can be created in your size.

Q. Do you take custom orders?

A. Please contact me via email at sclearyjewelry@gmail.com to discuss custom orders. Depending on my schedule and the time of the year I may be unable to accept custom orders at that time.

Q. Can you melt down my family heirloom and make it into a new piece?

In most cases, yes! I have made some beautiful pieces by melting down or casting together old family jewelry. In order to use the same metal the design must be cast or melted down into an ingot and fabricated into a new piece which can be labor intensive. It may also depend on the alloy of the old metal. Many old alloys contain nickel which can make them difficult to work with. I would be happy to discuss your project about the possibilities!

Q. Can I trade gold for credit towards my custom design?

Yes, in most cases I can offer a credit equal to the current scrap value of the gold.

Q. Can I trade diamonds or gemstones for credit?

Sometimes! As a small business I do not always have the cash on hand to purchase diamonds for credit. Depending on the type of stone and size and if I have a need, then yes, I would happily recycle your gems for other pieces and give you credit.

Q. What is your return policy for custom designs?

I make every possible effort to ensure that you absolutely love the piece you receive. Each custom design is a design completely tailored to you---therefor I am not able to offer returns on custom orders. In order to ensure that you love your design, I will communicate through every step of the process, often emailing photos during crafting your piece and before setting any gems to ensure you are happy with your piece.

Q. Who retains the copyright and rights to reproduction of the custom design?

I retain all the rights to custom designs which is not limited to the right to reproduce the design as a custom work or for sale in my eCommerce store, at any time and without limitation. Unless otherwise noted in a written agreement, all custom designs are considered property of Sinead Cleary Jewelry,
